The Devastator is an independent publication founded in 2009 by Geoffrey Golden and Amanda Meadows, two comedy writer-editors from Los Angeles. The Devastator is a new and audacious book series of satirical writing, parody and original comics. We feature a mix of upcoming and renowned writers and artists. The Devastator publishes quarterly, which naturally means twice a year.
We’re obsessed with the relationship between prose and comics, having read humor and comics as punk youths. Our goal is to bring back satire in print, if only because we’re getting the disease in Johnny Mnemonic from staring at screens 20 hours a day.
We never lose sight of one thing: that it was all started with a mouse an online fundraising campaign. To print the book, we shot a trailer video with our friend James Urbaniak and took it to a new creative fundraising platform, Kickstarter.com. Amazingly, strangers clicked and gave us money on the promise of being potentially cool. Now, we’re in stores across the country, distributed internationally, available on digital comics site WOWIO, and our own storefront at devastatorquarterly.com/shop.
Our writers and artists are enormously talented folks who’ve worked for shows like “The Simpsons,” “The Daily Show,” “The Colbert Report,” and Adult Swim. Our artists are also published by comics greats like DC Comics, BOOM! Studios, Drawn and Quarterly, and Fantagraphics. Some of our artists have even won Eisner and Ignatz awards. Our comedy writers have written for The Onion, McSweeney’s, National Lampoon, CollegeHumor, Funny or Die, UCB comedy, and countless terrible places too!
So far we’ve garnered positive word from PW Comics Week, The Beat, The Sound of Young America’s Jesse Thorn, NYC comedy nexus The Apiary, Cartoon Brew’s Animation Historian Jerry Beck, premiere webcomics blog The Daily Cross Hatch; and an endorsement from The Yale Record.
